Wicked Wednesday – Fury Calls

FURY CALLS Coming in March 2009This Wicked Wednesday is for all the fans of THE CALLING vampire novels! Coming in March 2009 is FURY CALLS, a story about a vamp drug that is wreaking havoc in the Manhattan vampire underworld courtesy of a Kiang-shi — a Chinese vampire named Sun-Tze Lee. Diana, Ryder, Diego and others will need to work hard to find out who is responsible for the drug before it destroys the vampire underworld they know.

You will hopefully love seeing the return of sexy punk vampire Blake Richards and NYU Coed turned immortal Meghan Thomas. I’ve been dying to write their story since I first introduced them in TEMPTATION CALLS.

In FURY CALLS, I’ll also be introducing Otro Mundo, an upscale restaurant with private dining rooms owned by Diego Rivera and Ryder Latimer.

So, without further ado, here’s a sneak peek at FURY CALLS!

Prologue

Her deadly kiss was near, but he welcomed it.

He buried his fangs deep in her breast as she held him the way a mother might cradle a child while he fed on milk-spiced blood. But then she gently eased his head back, enough to expose the rising pulse beating at his neck. Bending her head, she sank her fangs through the fragile barrier of his skin.

Blood rushed, hot and sweet, awakening the kind of passion that only vampires could share. The little love drug he had added to their drinks earlier that night also ramped up the passion surging through their bodies. As his partner murmured a growly complaint that she was still hungry, he said, “It’s the juice. It’ll pass once you sip a little more.”

And once he had a little more, he thought as he tried to sate his need from her sweet
breast. When they finally ripped away from each other their bodies were supercharged — sexually and violently. Fangs stained crimson from their feast retracted as they surged together for a kiss, bodies naked and heated from the torrent of immortal blood rushing through their veins and the potent chemical mix of the drug.

Over and over they kissed, licking the last remnants of blood from their lips, but soon that wasn’t enough once again.

He pulled away from her, unseeing of anything other than the perfection of her body as he trailed his hands across warm skin, flush with the life bestowed by his blood. He kissed the tip of the breast where he had been feeding just moments earlier.

There wasn’t even a hint of his bite there since she had already healed.

He suckled the tip and she moaned, reached down and unerringly found the head of his erection and stroked it, pulling a needy groan from him.

Their passion was too great for prolonged foreplay, he knew. Besides, his blood seemed to be sizzling in his veins from the demand to devour every part of her in every possible way.

He dragged her beneath him and onto the plush cushions of the settee in their private dining room and without further delay, drove into her, seeking satisfaction.

His thrusts grew stronger, more violent, yanking a strangled gasp from her as the craving to feed rose again, potent and more demanding than anything he had ever experienced before. For a fleeting moment, he wondered how long it would take for the kick of the drug they had ingested earlier to subside.

He shook his head, nearly lightheaded from the strength of his medicated lust, so great that he felt that if he didn’t taste her life’s blood again, he would die from the want of it.

As his gaze met hers, he realized she was feeling the same overwhelming pull of hunger.

Surging toward one another, they bared their fangs once again and attacked, fury replacing any other wants, driving them to the darkest corners of their immortal kind.

Chapter 1

With a flip of her wrist, Meghan Thomas tossed the porcini mushrooms in the saute pan. The brandy she had added to the pan flared up with a quick flash of fire before it burned off.

She placed the pan back onto the flame and was just adding some cream to reduce with the mushrooms for a sauce when she sensed it.

Meghan didn’t really know what “it” was, but her vampire powers were telling her that something very wrong had occurred. The other vamps in the kitchen sensed it as well. From the bus boys to the waiter who paused by the doors to the other vamp chef a few stations down, they all had become aware of something odd. It had to be something powerfully wrong for the vampires of all ages, even someone as new as her to the undead world, to feel “it”.

She took the pan off the flame and put it to the side just as Diego Rivera, part owner of the restaurant and her mentor of sorts, pushed through the door into the kitchen. Diego looked around as if to see if the source of the disturbance had come from within and then he faced her.

“Is everything okay in here, Meghan?”

Wiping her hands on the towel tucked into her apron, she walked to him and said, “Yes, but you feel something as well, don’t you?”

At his abrupt nod, she laid a hand on the sleeve of his expensive silk suit jacket and asked, “What was it?”

She had hoped that with his greater vampire age and therefore stronger powers, he would have known what had been the sensation that all of them had experienced, but the look on his face told her otherwise.

“I’ll find out,” Diego said, worry stamped onto his fine features. A deep furrow was etched between his brows as he pivoted on one heel and out of the kitchen, Meghan right behind him.

When he realized she was following, he stopped. “There’s no need for you to come with me.”

She searched his features and realized he was just trying to protect her much as he had for over four years now. Although she had appreciated that assistance before she had resigned herself to her new immortal life, it was long beyond the time for her to start being a help rather than a hindrance. “I can watch your back if need be. I’m not a newbie anymore.”

For a moment Diego appeared ready to protest, but then he turned and strode along the edge of the restaurant’s main floor and as he did so, she shot a quick look around.

Most of the diners were intent on the meals before them, but a couple of heads turned their way and she recognized some familiar vampire faces. They had all sensed the disturbance as well, but remained in their seats. They had human partners at their tables and might not want to reveal their undead status. At least, not yet, Meghan thought.

Diego entered the hallway which led to the private dining rooms along the first floor, but she discerned nothing unusual there as they walked past the pair of doors. At the end of the hall, Diego nearly vaulted up the stairs to the next floor.

The feeling grew stronger here, but Diego didn’t pause, as if he already knew the answer to their question rested on the uppermost floor of the building where the last two private dining rooms were located. As young as she was in vampire years, even Meghan perceived the pull of that weird something dragging them ever upward.

When they stepped from the stairs into the hallway on the top floor, the smell of blood assaulted them.

Meghan immediately experienced a burst of heat in the center of her body. Before she could control the reaction, the heat traveled through her like fast-moving lava, summoning the vampire she hated and had struggled for so long to learn to control. Her fangs exploded from her mouth, dropping down to mid-jaw and all around her, things jumped to life as her vamp senses went into overdrive. From the glow of the sconces to the muffled sounds of their feet along the thick Oriental carpet, her immortal senses registered every little nuance that a human couldn’t.

That she couldn’t have sensed before being turned years earlier. Fury rose inside of her, much as it did every time that she was reminded of what she no longer was. Her anger was fueled by the violence of the vampire that had assumed control thanks to the too strong smell of blood.

Diego shot a concerned look at her, his brows furrowed over crystal blue eyes which were bleeding out to the strange neon-green of the undead, but nothing else gave away what he was. He was mastering his transformation and as he noted that she hadn’t, and maybe even picked up on her anger, he said, “Niña, you need to collect yourself. There are others around.”

Others meaning humans, she realized. Others not like me anymore.

The doors to the private dining rooms were closed and she was certain that if there had been any vampires there — any live vampires that was — they would be out in the hallway investigating the source of the disturbance and the overwhelming aroma of blood.

With a deep breath, she gathered herself and forced back her fury and blood lust, summoning the human to return. But even after reassuming control, the scent of death and the frisson of fear that something otherworldly was wrong lingered.

Wicked Wednesday – Crazy for the Cat!

MOON FEVER Anthology - NY Times and USA TODAY Bestseller - Clilck here for more infoToday’s Wicked Wednesday is a little treat from my NY Times and USA Today Bestseller MOON FEVER, an anthology with the amazing Maggie Shayne, Susan Sizemore and Lori Handeland. I loved creating a mythology based on shapeshifters and setting it in the Amazon. My hope was that you’d not only enjoy seeing a different kind of creature, but that you’d take away some of the concerns about human encroachment and destruction of the Amazon rainforest.

Today’s tidbit comes after the heroine, Jessica, is attacked outside her hut and the hero, Javier, comes to her rescue — not that she needs rescuing!

Also, my friend LA Banks sent a link to some pictures from RT, so click here to check them out!

Warning - Possible Spoilers up ahead!

Jessica took hold of his hand and led him into the hut.

She flipped on a battery-powered lantern she had brought with her and quickly pulled a small first aid kit from her supplies. Placing the kit on the desk to one side of the hut, she removed what she would need to dress the wound.

As she turned, she realized Javier had come to stand close and her elbow brushed across the hard muscles of his midsection, reminding her of all his blatant masculinity.

“Sorry,” she mumbled, but then laid a hand against the taut muscles at his waist to urge him to toward the light so she could examine the nature of the wound.

The knife had caught him across a rib, preventing the blade from biting too deeply, but the long cut would need to be closed somehow. “This may hurt,” she said as she wet a piece of gauze with some antiseptic.

“I think I can handle it,” he replied, but he flinched and his muscles jumped as she applied the gauze to his side. He muttered a curse beneath his breath even though her touch was gentle as she cleansed the area.

She told herself not to appreciate his amazing body as she worked, but it was nearly impossible with so much lean muscle and creamy skin so enticingly close. She hurried as much as she could, using the various butterfly bandages in her kit to close the gaping edges of the wound before taping a piece of gauze over the injury.

Lightly she smoothed the tape around the edges of the gauze, trying to ignore his physical presence. Trying not to see how the reddish rosette patterns played across his skin and the palm bands hugged an impossibly lean waist and thick-muscled chest.

As she shot a glance up at him, she realized that he was as affected as she, no matter their earlier enmity. His breath was ragged, but not with pain.

With desire.

He bent from his greater height until the edge of his jaw brushed the side of her forehead. His breath was warm against the sweat-damp skin there.

She stroked her hand over the gauze covering the wound, but he laid his hand there and stilled the motion.

His hand was hot. His palm deliciously rough and the pull came between her legs again as she imagined him touching her. Her nipples tightened in anticipation and to battle that feeling she asked, “Who was that man who attacked us?”

Javier stroked her hand lightly. Slowly shifted his hand upward to caress her forearm. “One of Armando’s goons.”

Needing to touch him as he caressed her, she picked up her other hand and mimicked his action, laying her hand on the sculpted biceps of his arm. As she stroked the hard moist flesh there, she asked, “Is the timber valuable enough — ”

“To kill for? No. Armando has other reasons for hurting the tribe,” he said, moving his hand upward to cup the top of her arm, where he lightly caressed her skin with the pad of his thumb.

Her gaze locked with his, searching the strange gold-green gaze which revealed nothing but desire.

“What kinds of reasons?” she asked as she shifted her hand to his chest and traced the edge of the palm band encircling it. As she did, she fingered the hard nub of his nipple, dragging a ragged breath from him.

“Isn’t it enough for you to know you need to watch yourself?” Even as he said it, he cradled her breast and tweaked her nipple between his thumb and forefinger, causing a shudder to rip through her body.

“Well?” he challenged as he snaked his hand upward, slipped it beneath the edge of her tank top and drew down both the shirt and her bra to reveal her breast.

“Do you think you’re owed this little look because you came to my rescue?” she asked, but didn’t stop him as he lowered his head to taste the nipple he had exposed. If anything, she held him close, cradling the back of his head with her hand as she said, “Or do you think this is how to say thanks for my tending to you?”

He chuckled against her breast and gave an enticing lick with a cat-rough tongue before pulling away.

“You’re quite different from what I expected,” he said, stepping back to break contact with her as she rearranged her clothing, suddenly embarrassed by the unexpected interlude. It had to be the alcohol and guarana she told herself, denying her attraction to him was based on anything else.

“Why’s that?” she said, crossing her arms before her as if to provide some defense against his still hungry gaze.

“Because you’ve got more balls than most men I’ve met. Regardless, remember to be careful in the jungle tomorrow.”

With that he turned and walked out of the hut, leaving her to ponder just what had gone so wrong that she already had someone after her ass.

As she recalled Javier’s gifted mouth, she amended that thought with a smile.

Make that two people after her ass because she had no doubt that she and Javier would eventually finish what they had started tonight, although part of her was annoyed that he had managed to deflect her questions by arousing her passions.

She had come here in part for answers. To find out about the plant with the healing powers. To learn more about where Victor had died and possibly the why of it.

After today’s run-ins with Armando and his goons, she was wondering if they had anything to do with her friend’s death and vowed to find out.

Guilty Pleasure Monday – Adrian Paul . . . again

Adrian and me!Sorry to not have given you a Fun Friday, but I’ve been swamped with both legal and writing work!! Plus, I’m off to RT. Hey Gretchen, there’s that picture of me and Adrian (NOT!)(although I am probably that short compared to him!).

I will try to get a picture for you, but as I mentioned, they are charging for that meal so I’ll have to stalk the corridors, waiting for him. LOL!

On another note, since I am going to RT, look for me to be a roving reporter this week from the trenches of this amazing romance book convention. Hopefully I can provide you some comments from other romance writers, booksellers, readers, the parties, you name it! Also, I’ll be blogging on the RT site on Thursday as well as offering some workshops. I’ll try to get a link for you soon.

Have a great Monday and I’ll keep you posted on my wild times at the convention.

Guilty Pleasures Monday – Alex Garcia from ARDOR CALLS

Alex Garcia, Miami DEA Agent from ARDOR CALLSSo sorry to be late with today’s Guilty Pleasures Monday, only it was quite a weekend! I was busy finishing up A SOLDIER’S SECRET CHILD which will be out from Silhouette Romantic Suspense very soon and getting to work on the proposal for the next book in THE CALLING series — VENGEANCE CALLS (#11 if we count the two novellas!)

Of course, doing the synopsis for that one got me thinking about the two that preceded it. You may remember that bad boy Blake will be the hero in #9 – FURY CALLS. Blake’s been in a number of books already, but had a sexy time with Stacia in DESIRE CALLS, which is still a free read at eharlequin.com.

Stacia is the heroine in #10 — ARDOR CALLS and as you can guess from her various appearances, it’s going to take quite a man to be able to stand up to her and reach her heart after the nearly two millenia that Stacia has been a vampire. The hero in ARDOR CALLS — Alex Garcia — is someone you’ve seen already in DEATH CALLS. He’s Diana ex-love and a Miami DEA Agent.

Alex is sexy and slightly exotic, much like Stacia. He’s also determined and passionate. So far, the sparks are flying in the draft I’ve done and I hope you’ll think so as well when I get the okay to post an excerpt. In the meantime, here’s my idea of what Alex might look like as he takes a dip in the South Beach waters. FYI — this novel in THE CALLING will be set in Miami and I hope you’ll enjoy the tropical change of pace.

Also, for those of you with the Kindle, Amazon has an amazing price on the entire CALLING Collection — 9.99!

Thoughtful Thursday – Confessions of a Science Geek

Image courtesy of Microsoft Word Clip ArtI have a confession to make. I’m a science geek. Always loved messing with all those test tubes and doing experiments which is I guess why I was a science major in college.

One of the best Christmas presents I ever got was a chemistry lab and you can bet that I did every single experiment that came with that kit and proudly showed them to my mom who appreciatively murmured her approval at the bits of black gunk floating around in the test tube.

If Fate hadn’t thrown me a curve, I probably would have continued to pursue some kind of career in the sciences, but instead I ended up in law school and eventually, took up writing again.

Writing is a wondrous thing in so many ways, including allowing me to explore my inner geek again! I’m happy to say that I accepted a two book deal from Grand Central Publishing for a new paranormal romantic suspense series which relies heavily on science. TAINTED BLOOD, the first book in the series, is about a gene therapy victim who finds herself not only developing superhuman powers, but also accused of a murder she did not commit.

So the geek in me has been busy researching all kinds of things, like gene expression and splicing. Unusual diseases and using gene therapy treatments to cure them. Lots of fun stuff.

It helps that I took genetics, immunology, biochem and a bunch of other higher level science classes during college and I’ve been keeping up off and on on with what’s happening in the bio/genetic engineering world just ’cause it’s so interesting!

I know, I know. Geek. I’d be the perfect match for CHUCK or the guys from THE BIG BANG THEORY. But that’s okay.

Someone’s got to love the nerds. Of course, the hero in this book, Mick Carerra, is anything but a nerd. He’s ex-military and a man with a past who knows only one thing — he’s got a check with a lot of zeroes to compensate him for bringing in our gene-challenged heroine.

This book is slated for publication some time in 2010, so I’ll keep you posted on the progress!

On another note, I’ve got a friend, Lisa Daily — who’s a syndicated columnist, author, media personality — and she’s got a book out right now that you might like. Lisa will be visiting on April 2nd to tell us about her new release and offer up a prize to anyone who posts a comment on the blog. So please drop by then!

For information on Lisa in the meantime, you can visit www.lisadaily.com by clicking here.
