I’m getting ready for our Liberty States Fiction Writers Conference this weekend and it’s crazy time as I round up everything I need, especially since I’m the Conference Chair this year. I’m so excited about the conference, but also making lists and checking them twice so everything goes off without a hitch. Actually, I do that for most conferences and decided I’d share with you my list of 5 things to remember if you’re going to a conference! First, take your business cards and if you’re a reader, no reason not to have them either so that you can share them when you meet someone new. That’s number two on my list: meet new people. Third, learn something new. The fourth item is very important, namely, Have Fun! Last but not least, take something I’ve learned and use it to improve my career. It could be a writing tip or something about marketing, but I always learn something that can help! By the way, if you’re in the Hamilton, NJ area, I’ll be at the Book Fair on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30. The book fair is open to the general public and I’d love to see you. The Book fair is at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hamilton, NJ.

Hard Parts of Being a Published Author
One of the hard parts of being a published author is all the work you have to do for promotion. It takes time to think about what to write and what images to share. I have to say that Canva has helped a lot with the images part of it since it makes it easier to design the images. But then there’s also thinking about what conferences to attend and what to do at those conferences, like being on panels or hosting parties. You also have to think about what to bring to a conference to give out to readers! This year I’ve made some new koozies and bookmarks. What do you think? Would you like to get one of these? If you’ll be in the NJ area in April, you can catch me at the Liberty States Fiction Writers Conference Book Fair on April 1 and the Day of Wine, Romance, and More on April 29 and 30! Check out the events page for complete details on these events!
The Hardest Part of Writing a Novel
Ernest Hemingway said that “The hardest part of writing a novel is finishing it.” I know many many writers who have started and somehow can’t get to “The End.” For me, the hardest part of writing a novel is actually getting going once I finish the first few chapters. For some reason I find myself agonizing over where to go even with all the information I know about how to plot, do dialogue, etc. It’s almost like fear of failing, I think. But eventually, I knuckle down and finish thankfully.
My Writing Process
Every writer has a writing process and I often tell aspiring authors that there is no right or wrong to that process since it’s unique to each writer. I have an office where I usually write unless it’s a nice summer day where you’ll find my writing on my little balcony. Whether on my balcony or in my office, I don’t sit at a desk to write. I spent too much time at a desk when I had my full-time job so I sit on my futon with a lap desk to write. I also watch TV while I write. Weird, I know. Some people need quiet, but since I got used to writing on the train while I commuted to and from NYC, I got used to not having quiet while I work. Today I’m sharing my office with you so you can get a clue as to who I am as a writer and also as a person.

How much do you love reading?
I was always an avid reader as a kid. My grandmother would walk us to either the library or bookmobile for us to get some books to read. Reading has been one of the joys in my life since it transported me to other worlds. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it a 10. My one complaint is that with all the writing I’m doing, I don’t get to read as much as I would like. How about you? On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you love reading? (Loaded question, right?” #writewed #amreadingromance #lovereading
Stay Positive and Stay the Course
I’m a firm believer that you have to stay positive and stay the course if you want to accomplish something. That’s especially true of today’s publishing industry. Whether your indie, small press, or traditional, authors face more challenges than ever, IMHO. But no matter what, you won’t succeed if you give up. My mother always told me that nothing worthwhile is easy and it’s an adage that I keep in my brain constantly. So even though things may seem tough, stay positive and keep working at it!
